A bonded warehouse is a secure, customs-controlled facility where imported goods can be stored without paying import duty or VAT upfront. While goods remain “in bond”, VAT is not paid and duty is deferred. Charges only become due when the goods are formally released into the UK market.
Bonded storage is commonly used to improve cashflow, hold stock securely before sale or distribution, and to support re-export (where goods may leave the UK without UK VAT being charged).
HMRC Supervision
Goods are held under customs control with strict compliance, audit trails, and inventory records.
Secure Access
Controlled entry, visitor logs, monitored areas, and restricted zones protect goods and maintain chain-of-custody.
No Movement Without Authorisation
Nothing is released, picked, or removed without the correct customs documentation and internal approval.
Owner-Only Access Requests
Only the registered owner of the goods can apply for access/inspection and request security clearance.
Third-Party Viewing
A third party may only attend with written authorisation from the goods owner and approved clearance.
Identity Verification
Visitors must be pre-registered, provide valid ID, and follow site security procedures during the visit.
Note: Goods remain in bonded status during inspection. VAT is not paid while goods are stored in bond.
